Showing early traction clearly

A simple evidence checklist for early-stage founders: separate interest, usage and paid demand, and put every number in context.

Show behaviour, not just attention

A waiting list shows interest. Repeat usage shows that people return. Paid renewals show that at least some customers continue to value the product enough to pay. Each is useful, but they answer different questions.

There is no single traction threshold that fits software, robotics and other emerging technologies. Explain what evidence is meaningful for your business and what remains unproven.

Choose a small, honest evidence set

Use a few facts you can explain and reproduce. Separate one-off revenue from recurring revenue, signed contracts from collected cash, and free pilots from paid customers. Avoid extrapolating one unusually strong week into a full year.

  • Period: when was the evidence recorded?
  • Definition: what counts as an active user or paying customer?
  • Repeat behaviour: do customers return, renew or buy again?
  • Acquisition: how did these customers find you?
  • Limitations: small sample, discounts, founder relationships or unfinished tests?

Connect the evidence to a next test

For a Bangkok software pilot, five introductions from friends and two paid renewals tell different stories. Explain both. For hardware, a working prototype and a completed customer trial may matter before recurring usage can be measured.

End with what you plan to learn next: whether customers will pay without a discount, whether adoption survives without founder support, or whether the product works in a second customer setting. These are examples of useful questions, not investment eligibility rules.

A compact evidence table to recreate in your own document

Copy this into your own document and adapt it to your business.

Metric | Definition | Period | Result | Limitation
[Paid customers] | [Payment received] | [Month] | [Number] | [Discounts / sample size]
[Repeat use] | [Your definition] | [Period] | [Result] | [What remains uncertain]

Next test: [question].
Evidence we will collect: [measure].

These guides help founders present evidence for a potential private-company investment. They are general preparation tools. They are not investment terms or a promise of funding.
